How to Use Alphabet and Number Flash Cards in Your Classroom or Home

Did you know there are more than one way to use flash cards in your classroom or home? You do not have to just use them for rote memorization. You can turn them into games and activities that your students love so they can learn the basics without getting bored or frustrated.

Fishing game alphabet recognition flash card game

One of my kids' favorite ways to use flash cards is to turn it into a fishing game. We simply attach a paperclip to the top of the card and use a magnetic pole to catch each card. Once the card is caught, say the letter, letter sound, number, or count to practice the skill you want to know with that card.

numerical or alphabetical order and matching

Another activity is to give your students a set of flash cards and ask them to put them in alphabetical or numerical order. This is a great activity to do in pairs or small groups, allowing more advanced students to assist or help those who need more practice with letters and numbers. You can also create a matching or concentration game by having two sets of flash cards or two complementary sets of flash cards that students can match.

number counting cards

One way to use number flash cards is to let students count to the correct number by using small objects such as buttons, counting cubes, mini erasers, or counters. Students get practice recognizing the numbers as well as counting to that number!

pocket chart games

Pocket chart games are a great whole group activity that all students can get involved in. Another favorite of my kids is when we lay out the flash cards and hide a picture. They have to say the letter name, letter sound, number, etc to locate the hidden picture. Once the picture is found, hide it again for more fun! You can also place all the letters or numbers on the board, and then randomly remove one and see if the students can guess which letter or number is missing!

Another way to make learning letters and numbers fun is to have the flash cards themed. A theme the students love and enjoy can make them more apt to try and learn.
